Neighborhood Info

The Ridge at South Mountain invites you to “enjoy the quiet beauty of Western Carolina” when you visit – and that will be your first impression of this picturesque, private gated community, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Rutherford County, North Carolina, between Charlotte and Asheville. You’ll be taken in by the serene seclusion of mountainside living at its best.

The eastern side of The Ridge is within sight of the South Mountains State Park and Game Lands, a permanent preservation of more than 30,000 acres that will never be open to future development. These mountains are visible from numerous lots in The Ridge and inspired the naming of the development. Nearby, Lisenberry Mountain and Cherry Mountain are also visible.

With elevations nearing 2000 feet, the western side of The Ridge not only has views of the South Mountain Range, but views of Hogback and Skyuka mountains in Tryon, Kings Mountain in Gaston County, and long-range, unobstructed views – some approaching 70-miles – towards Charlotte and Spartanburg, SC. Since they developed the ridges of the property, even lots lower in elevation have beautiful views.

The Ridge encompasses nearly 500 acres. The developer took care to disturb no more trees than necessary to optimize each lot’s view of the surroundings, yet maximize privacy. Their goal was to maintain the peaceful seclusion of mountain living while retaining the security and amenities afforded by living in an up-scale gated community. From its landscaped entrance to its NCDOT spec roads, spectacular landscaping, public water and quality building requirements, the developer has tried to ensure the excellence and longevity of the market for homes in The Ridge for a long time to come. Every decision made in The Ridge’s development was based on what is best for the buyer.

Regarding the building sites, when you deal with mountains, you will deal with steep slopes. As you get higher in elevation the views get better, but the slopes get steeper.  However, no lot in The Ridge requires anything more than conventional grading and/or foundation construction.  Many of the upper lots lend themselves to basement foundations, while many of the lower lots can easily be built on a crawlspace foundation. The minimum building size requirements are 1500 square feet with a full basement, and 1800 square feet with a partial basement, crawlspace or slab foundation.

They allow log cabins, but are not strictly a log cabin community.  They encourage each person to build a home that fits their needs and desires. They allow any natural type siding (stone, wood boards and shakes, etc.) as well as hardiplank and brick.  However; modular and mobile homes are not allowed.  The developers are happy to work with the contractor of your choice to ensure your new home is built to maximize the natural beauty surrounding your home site.

The Ridge has public water so their water supply source will be pristine and dependable.  They also added a booster pump station and an 80,000 gallon storage and distribution tank at the top of the mountain to provide fire protection. Every lot in The Ridge is within 500 feet of a fire hydrant giving each homeowner homeowner’s insurance discounts.

 Rutherford County Information

If you’re not familiar with Rutherford County you might like to do a little research. Here’s a link for Rutherford County information, you’ll find a lot of information here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutherford_County,_North_Carolina  Rutherford County is huge at about 566 square miles and diverse. We range from the semi flatlands to the south east of the county to the mountains with lots of valleys in-between. Rutherford County is comprised of 17 townships with names like: Golden Valley, Duncan’s Creek, Logan’s Store – these I’m told were the areas that hosted post offices, back when mail was delivered by horseback. Within those townships are many communities. My husband and I live in Sunshine Community. Near to us is Washburn Community and there’s a semi famous store there. You will find several YouTube videos about Washburn’s Store. At Washburn Store you can buy anything from overalls, pickles, hoop cheese, order a wood cook stove, buy a cast iron pan….
http://www.rutherfordcountync.gov/ has a lot of local information including tourism. The chamber of Commerce will be of some benefit, perhaps you’d like to look at the county demographics Rutherford County Chamber .   The weather here is modified by the Isothermal weather region, “More has probably been written regarding thermal belts in the North Carolina mountains than in any other section of the country, doubtless because the phenomena are more pronounced there than elsewhere in the East on account of the more extensive slopes and the greater area. The Appalachian Mountains, which form the

divide between the great central valleys of the United States and the Atlantic Plain extend in a southwest-northeast direction from Pennsylvania to northwest Georgia, but the culminating section of the system lies in western North Carolina. While the elevation of the Atlantic Plain at the base of the mountains is only 150 feet in Pennsylvania, and perhaps 500 feet in Virginia, in North Carolina it rises to about 1,000 feet.” Isothermal Belt Explained by Noaa.gov is a 110 page pdf, by all means enjoy!
You might like to see the Farmer’s Fresh Market, Area Information or Community Links and other information in my GoldenValley Blog.
Here’s a ROC link Explore, Exercise, Relax. There are lots of things to do here, but most of our buyers don’t move here to do anything in particular. They just want to enjoy the peace and solitude of a rural area, to feel the change of pace, to relax and recharge. I think you’ll find, most of the time, once you get home you won’t want to leave.
If you need to be near the center of activity, where there’s a lot going on all the time, this will not suit you. We’re so far out in the country the speed limit is 55 and there are NO stoplights. While there’s always something going on, you’re going to have to drive to get there.
But, I like it like that. Maybe you will too.
