Founded in 1777, San
Jose is the site of the oldest civil settlement in California. San Jose was
incorporated on March 27, 1850. It was California’s first incorporated city and
site of the first state capital. It is comprised of 177.7 square miles. San
José is approximately 45 minutes south of San Francisco and 90 minutes north of
Monterey. San Jose is the third largest city in California and the 11th largest
city in the nation.
Northern California in
general and San José in particular have a world-renowned quality of life. The
City of San José has the nation's best public safety record of any metropolitan
area, a marvelous ethnic diversity and a beautiful climate. The San Jose
Metropolitan Area ranks first in the nation in median household effective
buying income among all metropolitan areas. San Jose has the lowest crime rate
of any major city in the U.S. with populations greater than 500,000. San José

San José is the Gateway
to the Bay Area. Rich in history and cultural diversity, San Jose is recognized

among large metropolitan areas as a world class manufacturing community based
on manufacturing strength and the high productivity of area workers. San Jose
metropolitan area continues to have the highest productivity level of any
region in the U.S. San Jose leads the nation in the number of high-tech
companies. The education level of the San Jose metropolitan area workforce is
one of the highest in the U.S. 67 percent of the workforce has some college
education and 40 percent have earned a college degree. San Jose is known as the
“Capital of Silicon Valley.” Fortune magazine has called San Jose "the
epicenter of information technology."

of San Jose Police Department makes the Megan’s Law web application database
available at the police department or any of the San Jose community centers.
The web application database is available in Arabic, Armenian, Cambodian,
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and
Vietnamese. Also available on line is a list of high risk sex offenders located
in San Jose and surrounding San Jose areas.
