The City of Chelsea, Massachusetts is located in Suffolk County directly across the Mystic River from the City of Boston. The City was first settled in 1624, established itself as a Town in 1739 and was incorporated as a City in 1857. As of 2013, Chelsea had an estimated population of 36,828. It is also the second most densely populated city in Massachusetts behind Somerville. Chelsea is located next to scenic Boston Harbor on the Mystic and Chelsea Rivers and is a tiny 1.8 square miles community. From its numerous hills and high points, Chelsea offers a magnificent view of Boston's nearby skyline. Chelsea is also home to tree-lined streets with well kept homes, ballparks, playgrounds and a busy downtown district. Logan International Airport is only five minutes away and connects Chelsea with the world. Chelsea is a diverse, working-class community that contains a high level of industrial activity. Thanks to its relative affordability and close proximity to Boston, Chelsea has added more than 1,200 homes since 2005, mostly loft-style apartments and condominiums attractive to small families and young professionals. There has also been significant office, retail and restaurant development throughout the city recently and growing excitement as the FBI plans to open a large office in Chelsea and the MBTA extends the Silver Line from East Boston through Chelsea with a dedicated bus roadway.
