Located 16 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Skokie is a thriving community catering to suburban residents who enjoy a more urban lifestyle. The community was recently recognized by Livability.com as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live in 2014.
Incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888, the community was ultimately renamed Skokie in 1940 by referendum. Skokie experienced rapid growth during the 1920s, and again in the 1940s after World War II. Today, Skokie is a diverse community with a wide variety of residents.
The village of Skokie features an eclectic collection of architectural styles, including many bungalow-style homes and apartment buildings. The village is in the process of making significant enhancements to reinvent its downtown area and further improve its housing product.

Skokie is served by many top-notch public and private schools, including Niles West High School, which ranks among the best public schools in the country. Transportation is convenient for both residents and visitors thanks to the Edens Expressway, which is located along the community’s western edge, and the easily accessible CTA Yellow Line station.
The community is home to one of the region’s top shopping centers, Westfield Old Orchard Mall, offering a number of high-end retailers, restaurants, and two movie theaters. Skokie also has a nationally acclaimed park district, which provides special programs and events to residents year round, including a summer day camp.
