Rainelle was named for the Raine family. Thomas and his brother John Raine moved there from Pennsylvania in 1906 to exploit one of the last large stands of virgin hardwoods in the eastern United States. Their Meadow River Lumber Company operated for 60 years, and at one time was the largest hardwood sawmill in the world. In 1970, the owners sold it to Georgia-Pacific Corporation, which tore it down in 1975.
Population of Rainelle according to the 2010 Census is 1,505.
The Midland Trail, now part of U.S. Route 60, runs through the town.
 Greenbrier Hills Golf Course - Nine hole public course set amidst the breathtaking mountain scenery of West Virginia. Enjoy a picnic on the patio of the clubhouse or play a match or two on the tennis courts.
Public Swimming Pool - Located behind the Rainelle City Hall, this public swimming pool offers a slide and diving board.
Parks - Rainelle Parks Board operates the Bragg Park for young children and the Tenth Street Park as a multifunction park with basketball, skateboard, baseball, small children playground equipment and paved walking trail.
Outdoor Activities - Hunting, fishing, hiking, walking and other outdoor activities.

Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Rainelle United Methodist Church - Established in 1912, this building is thought to be the largest structure in the world built entirely of American Chestnut lumber.
