Spindale NC – A small textile town between Forest City and
Rutherfordton, NC. This little town sprang up around 1923 when textile mills
and factories were located there. It
might remind you of Andy Griffith’s bucolic made up town, Mayberry RFD. Today, most folks own a car and commute to
work, but some are employed in town at one of the several thriving restaurants,
the local Library, Spindale House, or the community center. Besides a local
drugstore and walk-in medical clinic, The American Dairy Goat Association is
located downtown. As recently as 2011, the town hosted a well-attended goat

In the heart of the Isothermal Weather Belt, a
temperate weather region that tends to have a little better weather than its
neighbors, a little cooler in the summer, a little warmer in the winter,
Spindale is situated to take full advantage. Along with the good weather,
Spindale is host to Isothermal Community
College. Spindale Campus, besides being the go to community college for
Rutherford County students, is home to an entertainment venue, The Foundation Performing Arts Center.
The campus also includes an eclectic radio station, WNCW, that, according to

is listened to by folks around the world.
Spindale is one of the three towns that make up the Tri-City
area. Spindale, Forest City and Rutherfordton have one movie theatre, one
Lowes, one Fatz, one super Walmart, one Staples, one Bojangles, and a host of charming
Main Street shops. We find we can get what we need locally and if not, we have
the internet.
Facebook has located in nearby Forest City and is bringing
some small tech startups to the area. The Tryon International
Equestrian Center is just up the road. If you want to venture out on your
bicycle, there’s an expanding rails to trails track. The Thermal Belt
Rail-Trail is about eight miles long and will eventually run more like 13.
This merges with the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail for
Revolutionary War enthusiasts. If you like, you can jump on and hike more than
50 miles.
Outdoor devotees love the area. It’s convenient to biking
and hiking and, over at the South Mountain State Park, river running, floating,
and new to the area zip lines. Rutherford County is home to Lake Lure and Chimney
Rock and has been a continual source of fun for tourists who have been coming
here since the 20’s.
For small town living in a charming mountain community it’s
hard to beat Spindale, NC.
