Population
Trends
On a National or even by Kentucky standards, Oldham
County has a tiny population, with just over 60,000 population. But that's one
of its charms as it has a low population
density of just 244 persons
per square mile and an equally low housing density with only 15,541 housing
units at an average density of 82 per square mile. Oldham County covers about 97 sq miles.
Based on the 2000
census it was predicted that by 2014 the population of Oldham County would
rapidly expand as its giant neighbor, Jefferson County, was running out of
space for new suburban-style development. That prediction was almost dead on as
the population increasing at about 4% per year, and at that growth rate the
number of residents is set to double every 21 years. This growth of Oldham
County was even more rapid between 1960 to 2000, when the population increased
245% (in the same period, Jefferson County only increased 13.5%).
Wealthy, Well Educated County
Oldham County is the wealthiest county in Kentucky and 48th
wealthiest county in the U.S. and ranks second highest in Kentucky for percent
of college educated residences. While the causes for this are complicated,
areas east of Louisville have
long been popular with wealthy residents, first as summer residences eventually
as year-round suburban estates and bedroom communities. Oldham County lies northeast of the best known of these luxury home areas, Anchorage, which is part of Louisville's wealthiest area, the East End.
Oldham
County Wealth Compared To Louisville/Jefferson County
Over the past few years Louisville has been losing a significant
portion of its tax because of the migration of many wealthy individuals to
Jefferson County's adjacent county's. See www.HowMoneyWalks.com, created by “How Money
Walks,” author economist Travis H. Brown.
Brown studied official
government records, including the IRS
and Census Bureau. Between 1992 and 2010 a
net $1.32 billion in adjusted
growth income moved out of Jefferson
County. The greatest amount went to Bullitt County (net loss of $367.79 million),
and the second most moved to Oldham County ($345.80 million).
