Description

The Epard/Porsch house was designed and built by award-winning Rockhill and Associates.

The overall form, details, and materials were inspired by Kansas rural architecture and equipment.

The form was inspired by a grain elevator complex in Sheridan County, Kansas.

Exterior materials: Limestone, glass, slate, galvanized steel, zinc, concrete, EPDM.

Interior materials: Birch, plaster, glass, slate, steel, concrete, EPDM.

Almost every component of the house was custom designed and fabricated by Rockhill and Associates, including the limestone masonry, cabinets, doors, windows, and fixtures.

Quarried in Kansas, limestone slabs were cut into shapes on site to create the unique "casual" coursing.

The house consists of two major sections. The Front Form is the "public" area with the living room and kitchen on the main floor, the library above, and the guest room in the basement. The basement opens out to the large patio and lap pool. Retractable stairs with limestone counterweights provide access to the library and a side ladder makes a quick shortcut when the stairs are retracted.

The three-story Back Form is the private area, with bedrooms and offices or studios above and the garage below. The Stair Tower and Bridge connect the two large forms. On top of the tower is the Observatory with its telescope mount and at the base of the tower is the Conservatory. Two large exhaust fans in the Stair Tower combine with openable windows throughout the house to provide ample ventilation.

Decks off the second and third floor as well as the tower observatory overlook the extensive gardens surrounding the pool and patio.

Neither the kite-shaped lot nor the house are “square with the world”. The lap pool's north-south alignment orients the occupants and recalls the Jeffersonian grid's section lines so apparent in Western Kansas.

The house has been published in several magazines and books and was featured in an episode of HGTV's Extreme Homes.
