Neighborhood Info

The Parkmead Neighborhood
(from Parkmead.org)

Welcome to Parkmead, a charming neighborhood with quiet, tree-lined streets. This peaceful community is located just minutes from downtown Walnut Creek, with its popular shopping district and exciting restaurant scene. Nature is close by, too: Shell Ridge Open Space and the Iron Horse Trail offer varied outdoor recreational activities. Our neighborhood is popular with cyclists and our safe streets invite walking and jogging.

Many of the 620 homes, most of which are single-story ranch houses, were built in the 1950s. The age means the trees are very mature and contribute to the charm. A part of our neighborhood is in the city of Walnut Creek and another part is in Contra Costa County, so is unincorporated.

Our schools are consistently rated among the best in California, benefiting from the enthusiastic support of parents and the community. Parkmead is part of the Walnut Creek School District (whereas many Walnut Creek homes are part of the much larger Mt. Diablo School District). Our neighborhood includes two highly rated elementary schools: Parkmead Elementary School and Tice Creek School (K-8). Las Lomas High School is not within the neighborhood boundaries but is in walking distance just across South Main Street.

Parkmead is also home to two places of worship: Hillside Covenant Church and the Chabad of Contra Costa County.

The Parkmead Community Association (PCA)
(from Parkmead.org)

The PCA is a voluntary membership organization that is governed by a board of elected officials and representatives across the neighborhood’s seven districts. We rely on voluntary annual membership dues of $15 per household.

The PCA helps promote the peace, health, safety, quality of life and environment of the Parkmead community area by encouraging and sponsoring neighborhood activities and events and communicating the interests of the membership and community to governmental bodies. We do this by:

Fostering Community. Our main focus is to improve the strength and depth of our community by organizing social events. Our current roster includes a neighborhood-wide garage sale, a summer pool party, a chili cook-off and a holiday sing-along.

Sponsoring Neighborhood Projects. We identify ways to enhance our community, organize and fundraise as needed. Recent projects include the resurfacing of the Newell Avenue Pathway and the creation and installation of a neighborhood sign.

Keeping Neighbors Informed. We notify residents of news that impacts the neighborhood, solicit suggestions for improving our quality of life; and arrange relevant guest speakers at neighborhood events. The PCA also distributes a newsletter to all Parkmead residents around its major events, and maintains this website.

Representing Parkmead Interests. We maintain liaison with governmental agencies (including the City of Walnut Creek and Contra Costa County) and watchdog organizations to keep abreast of planned projects or activities that affect our neighborhood.

Encouraging Neighborhood Health and Safety. We provide oversight on Newell Pathway maintenance, encourage participation in events like Walk to School Week and Community Service Day, and facilitate recommendations for neighborhood bike safety measures.

Dewing Park Swim Club
(from DewingParkSwimClub.com)

For over 50 years Dewing Park Swim Club has been a gathering place for families in the community. DPSC is a beautiful private community pool located in Walnut Creek. The grounds boast a five lane heated pool, diving area, wading pool for infants and toddlers, comfortable landscaped lawn areas, wi-fi, dressing rooms, outdoor showers, basketball hoop, ping pong table, and a brick BBQ pit and picnic area.

DPSC is also proud to be the home of its Swim Team, the Dewing Park Seahorses.  Our Swim Team, social events, beautiful grounds, and staff make DPSC a great place for you and your family to enjoy this summer.

Whether you are a new or returning family, Dewing Park Swim Club always feels like home.
