Welcome To Mount Prospect IL. The village of Mount Prospect is located 22 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and encompasses over ten square miles in Cook County. The area was first inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe, and in 1833, a treaty was signed with the Potawatomi to have the land also become available for New England settlers. By the 1840s, German immigrants followed and settled in the area. In the 1870s, entrepreneur Ezra Eggleston, who built the village's first train station, named the land he purchased Mount Prospect; “mount” represented the fact that it sat on some of the highest land elevation in Cook County, and “prospect” spoke to the great prospects for growth in the area. Incorporated in 1917, the village's motto remains, “Where Friendliness is a Way of Life.” Today, Mount Prospect housing is a vast blend of newer construction, 20th century ranches and bungalows, as well as many historically significant buildings constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In the styles of Victorian, Colonial Farmhouse, Georgian and Queen Anne, to name a few, the Mount Prospect Historical Society has recognized several important original homes for their historical contribution to the village. With a population of more than 54,000 Mount Prospect students are served by award-winning schools and multiple districts, including six elementary districts, three parochial schools and four high schools, including Prospect High School. Residents also enjoy convenient transportation options thanks to the Mount Prospect Metra station, which offers direct access to Chicago's Loop. Mount Prospect has been home to Ian Brennan, co-creator of popular TV show, Glee; American Idol Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze; and TV and film actress Jennifer Morrison.
