Founded in 1777, San Jose is the site of the oldest civil settlement in California. San Jose was incorporated on March 27, 1850. It was California’s first incorporated city and site of the first state capital. It is comprised of 177.7 square miles. San José is approximately 45 minutes south of San Francisco and 90 minutes north of Monterey. San Jose is the third largest city in California and the 11th largest city in the nation.
