Cherry Valley is a semi rural area with small ranches and large acreage properties dotted here and there with planned communities of newer homes. Cherry Valley is at the highest point on the San Gorgonio Pass Between San Bernardino and Palm Springs, It has a warm and sunny climate. The summers are hot and dry, with temperatures reaching into the upper 80s or even the 90s. However, this is tempered by cool evenings and occasional breezes. In the winter months it can be mild and rainy, with temperatures rarely below freezing. Rainfall is only about 20 inches per year which makes Cherry Valley an ideal place for an active outdoor lifestyle throughout most of the year. The area was once called Highland Springs, California, and dates back to the early 1800s when it was part of Rancho San Gorgonio, an outpost of the San Gabriel Mission. In 1853, Dr. Isaac William Smith purchased land here, establishing Smith Ranch and Highland Springs Ranch & Inn. The area flourished as a stagecoach stop on the route between San Bernardino and Arizona, with Wyatt Earp even driving this route. Smith's Station, as it became known, developed into a bustling hotel. In 1884, a Los Angeles company purchased the property and built the Highland Home hotel. The area's first cherry trees were planted here, contributing to its current name. In 1927, Fred and William Hirsch transformed the property into Highland Springs Resort, a health resort focused on natural healing methods like juice fasting.
