Ponte Vedra Beach dates back to the late 19th century when it began to
develop as a seaside retreat. However, the region’s history goes much
further back in time, as it was once inhabited by Native American tribes,
such as the Timucua, who thrive in the area long before the European settlers
arrived. In the 1880s, industrialist Henry Flagler recognized Florida’s
tourist potential during a visit to St. Augustine, prompting him to embark on
the construction of the immense 540-room Hotel Ponce de Leon in 1885.
Recognizing the need for a transportation system, he bought the Jacksonville,
St. Augustine & Halifax Railroad, the precursor to the Florida East Coast
Railway system. The Florida East Coast Railway played a significant role in
the development of Ponte Vedra Beach and the surrounding region. It extended
southward from Jacksonville to St. Augustine and beyond, brought an influx of
visitors to the area, spurring growth and development. One of the earliest
landmarks in Ponte Vedra Beach is the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, which was
founded in 1928. This historic resort has been a prominent fixture in the
area, attracting visitors with its luxurious amenities and beautiful
oceanfront location.

ecological diversity, cultural attractions, and being close to Jacksonville
and St. Augustine.
