Mendon History
The area around the present town of Mendon was originally inhabited by the Nipmuc Indians. The first settlers, who were from Roxbury, came in the 1640’s. The land was purchased from the Nipmuc Indian Chief Great John in 1662, and Mendon was officially incorporated in 1667. The original town consisted of the modern towns of Milford, Bellingham, Hopedale, and Uxbridge, which is why the town is nicknamed as Mother Mendon. It was partially destroyed and a many lost their lives during the King Philip’s War in 1675. Reconstruction and resettlement occurred in 1680 assisted by the efforts of Robert Taft Sr., a pioneer who belonged to the famous Taft family. Mendon is named after a town in England.
