In 1988, a comprehensive city-wide greenway master plan was developed by the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department. The objective was to maintain and protect open space while responding to the needs of recreational trail users. This would include bicyclists, hikers, walker and non-motorized activities. The 38-mile planned look encompasses Lee's Summit and the surrounding area. Over 100 miles of neighborhood connector routes are planned along roads, parks, and bodies of water.  There are presently 16 pieces in place with more to be added each year.

In fact, Lee’s Summit was recently designated a Bronze Level Walk Friendly Community for its walkability initiatives and programs by the Pedestrian & Bicycle Information Center.  If you are not familiar with Lee’s Summit, it is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and the 6th largest city in Missouri. According to Wikipedia, Lee’s Summit covers 61.7 sq. miles. There are numerous lakes and almost 30 public parks.  We are a sprawling city, so the Greenway Plan is essential for the enjoyment of the community.
