About the Neighborhood

Lincoln Heights/Highlands is a moderate to up-scale neighborhood located below the Warren Freeway (highway 13).  It stretched from the highway down to Carmel Ave and is between Lincoln Ave and Coolidge Ave.

On its western end, the neighborhood doesn’t have great views for the most part because it is located on a very gentle grade. It does however have enough of an incline to create some interesting topography for the homes placed theremostly homes dating back to before World War II.

As you approach Charleston Road and upper Coolidge, however, the views become much more impressive.  The homes up in this area are newer builds, usually dating from the 1950’s .   Ranch and Prairie Style homes are prevalent up in this section of Lincoln Heights as well as Mid Century Moderns.  As one crests to the Warren Freeway side of the neighborhoodthe eastern endthe winding streets become much more woody, the Ranch and Prairies slip back behind more leafy cover and the rents and home prices climb!  This is a well-known area for watching fire works on the Fourth of July.

You will find the Oakland Temple and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on this side right by Highway 13. Standing at the very crest of Lincoln Heights, the Mormon temple stares out over the SF Bay in quite magnificent fashion. The walkway up to the Temple is lined by tall palms and a beautifully designed garden leading up to a fountain and the impressive frontispiece of the Temple. People come from miles around to view the stunning Christmas light display during the holiday season.  The Greek Orthodox Cathedral is just down the way and hosts a well attended Greek Festival each year.

Although a 10 minute car ride to BART, Lincoln Heights has excellent public transportation much closer.  There is a casual carpool by CVS and Trader Joe's down on Fruitvale with plenty of parking underneath the 580 Freeway.  Many commuters take the free casual car pool in the morning and then return home via the ACTransit  NX & NL buses in the evening.  Or some commuters drive to Rockridge BART, park on the street and take the casual car pool to San Francisco and return to Rockridge via BART.  It is about a 10 minute drive either to the Rockridge BART station or to the MacArthur station.
