More details
Light and bright this home has many of the traditional features of the 1930's architectural style in the Oakland area. This could be called a traditional - using stucco with wood trim with gracious white shutters. The hardwood floor is the original oak random width, random length plank flooring that was popular during the 1930's and 1940's. The wonderful natural light is due to the large windows that became popular at the time. The breakfast noon features the corner windows - a corner of glass - a common feature. The large paned window in the living room is a focal point along with the attractive fireplace. There is a tile hearth either made of the Batchelder tiles or Claycraft tiles that were popular at the time. The vaulted ceiling in the living room gives the common area a sense of space and style ...could we say elegance? All the side windows in the living room and dining room open so that the afternoon breeze from the San Francisco Bay can cool the house.
The bedrooms are all good sized with substantial closets. Many of the closets have the original built in shoe racks.
There is a large one car garage with interior access to the house. The laundry room is next to the garage along with major systems - furnace and hot water heater. There is a finished basement area also that has previously been used as an office, spare bedroom and at one time, a rumpus room for children.
The backyard is probably the biggest surprise to most visitors. Although it appears to be a small concrete patio with a dog run, it actually goes for another 100 plus feet behind the patio. The lots on this side of 20th street are 175 ft long. Some neighbors have left the area grow wild while others have planted fruit trees and gardens. Currently peach, plum and apple trees with a few black berry and grape vines populate this back area. There is plenty of space for your own Urban Farm - some neighbors in the area even have chickens.
This location has a good walk score as you can walk to grocery shopping, local cafés and the Merritt Bakery along with ACTransit bus stops. Easy access to highways provides for a great commute either to San Francsico, Berkeley or Silicon Valley.
From this low hill, views of both the Oakland Hills and
downtown Oakland dominate the western and eastern skylines. The weather is very pleasant with the winds from the golden
gate mixing with the warmer Oakland air to provide a very temperate climate.
