Connelly Springs

Connelly Springs is located in eastern Burke County between Hickory, NC to the East and Morganton, NC to the West. The natural beauty surrounding Burke County and the small community of Connelly Springs includes the South Mountains, The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Table Rock, Lake James, and The Catawba River Valley.

Connelly Springs is now proud to have a Mayor and a six member Board of Aldermen serving 1,870 residents. The new Connelly Springs Town Hall opened in 2002 and services to the town citizens since re-incorporation include major water service projects, a wastewater service project, and residential garbage pickup.

The original town boundary lines have gained additional voluntary annexations over the years with the most recent and largest annexation being 375 acres in April, 2004.

Connelly Springs new and renovated business district sits along NC Hwy. #70 are experiencing a surge of growth. Included are: Dollar General, Connelly Springs Pawn Shop, Sizemore Auto Sales, Farris Insurance and Financial Center, Smart Electric, Knob Superette, Knob Car Wash, Ballard’s Hardware, Connelly Springs Electric and Heating Company, Z and R Remodeling, East Burke Auto Repair, and The Handy Mart. Lindy’s Furniture Store on Main Street Circle features contemporary and traditional furniture galleries and continues to serve the community, carrying on the tradition of early Hudson family merchants who settled in the community.

Morganton

The City of Morganton offers the unique charms of a small city yet embraces technology, new development and progressive thinking. The heart of Morganton is its vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, galleries, clothiers and antique shops. CoMMA, Morganton’s Municipal Auditorium, features “Sacred Dance and The Muses,” an original Ben Long fresco.

Morganton is the county seat of Burke County which is part of the "Unifour Region" including Burke, Caldwell, Catawba and Alexander Counties in western North Carolina.

Morganton has a population of just over 17,000 residents and encompasses more than 19.23 square miles.

Burke County

Burke County possesses a natural beauty that equals or surpasses that of any county in the state. Its appeal has been acclaimed as being representative of a rare jewel in the vast array of gems that make up the state and this country as a whole -- the envy of communities across the globe. From its majestic purple hills to the north to its green rolling hills to the south, Burke County lies nestled in the Catawba Valley River basin seemingly protected from the severe storms so common in other parts of the state and the country.

Efforts by the government of Burke County, as well as clubs, agencies, organizations, and private individuals have focused on preserving the natural beauty of Burke County for posterity. The combined efforts have hinged on a philosophy that to allow the beauty and appeal of Burke County to slip through our fingers would result in the loss of a rare jewel that could never be recovered.

Burke County with Morganton as its seat, is situated in the section of North Carolina where the rolling hills of the Piedmont blend with the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the south side of Burke County are the South Mountains. To the west are the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Burke County has about 514 square miles, or 329,469 acres, and has a population of 89,148 (census 2000). The largest landowners in Burke County, are the U.S. Government, Crescent Resources (Duke Energy Co.), and the State of North Carolina. The County also has the third largest concentration of state employment in the state through the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Department of Correction, School for the Deaf, Western Carolina Center, and Broughton Hospital. Burke County has been referred to as the "Western State Capital."

Western North Carolina

Western North Carolina is a combination of scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, history, and unique shopping opportunities. Renowned as a great place to live, because of its temperate climate, many activities, and low taxes. (Morganton, NC was voted as one of the top 10 places in the nation to raise a family, Readers Digest, May 1997.) It is also a wonderful place to visit. There are many things to see, and do, in our area. From outdoor sports, to museums, art galleries, antique shops, furniture outlets, restaurants, fine inns and bed & breakfasts.

Connelly Springs, Morganton & Burke County Attractions

Burke County boasts Lake James, believed to be one of the few pristine lakes remaining in the Southeast. Efforts are constantly under way to protect our lakes and streams. Efforts also to preserve a bit of Burke County's environmental heritage for posterity have resulted in the establishment of Lake James State Park and South Mountain State Park. Other attractions include the wild, rugged and scenic wilderness of Linville Gorge, the age-old mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights, panoramic vistas from the top of Table Rock, Short-Off Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Parkway

Tucked away in rolling hills at the base of Linville Gorge is Lake James, a 6,510-acre lake with more than 150 miles of shoreline. This impressive waterway is the centerpiece of Lake James State Park. Here, nature offers scenic vistas of the Appalachian Mountains and beckons to those with an appetite for recreation.

Bring family and friends to one of North Carolina's newest state parks for a variety of activities. Try swimming and sunbathing or enjoy a picnic along the lakeshore. Boat, water ski or fish in cool mountain waters, or take a walk and enjoy an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife along park trails. Lake James offers a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Nestled deep in the woods, South Mountains State Park is the perfect place to enjoy nature. Here you can see a majestic mountain range peeking out from the gently rolling landscape of the piedmont.

South Mountain State Park includes elevations up to 3,000 feet, a waterfall dropping 80 feet and more than 40 miles of trails. From equestrian camping to trout fishing, mountain biking to picnicking, a number of activities are available at South Mountains State Park.

Visit one of the state's most rugged parks. Hike the trail to High Shoals Falls to witness the roar of the waterfall as it pours into a large pool. Backpack through the woodlands for primitive camping. Fish for trout in miles of mountain streams, or bicycle along the 18-mile mountain-bike loop.

The 18-hole "Pine Mountain" course at the Pine Mountain Golf Course facility in Connelly Springs, North Carolina features 4,949 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 68. The course rating is 62.8 and it has a slope rating of 103 on Blue grass. Designed by Pomelard, the Pine Mountain golf course opened in 1974. Greg Clountz manages the course as the General Manager.

Old Burke County Courthouse Located in downtown Morganton, built in the 1840s, was the summer seat of the North Carolina supreme court 1848-1861. Restored, now houses a museum and the Burke County Travel & Tourism Commission.

Quaker Meadows Plantation and Cemetery built in 1812 and now restored. Land was settled in the 1760s. The over mountain men camped on the grounds on the way to their victory at King's Mountain.

Waldensian Museum Valdese, North Carolina. A presentation of the history of the Waldensians who settled in our area over 100 years ago.

Trail of Faith Valdese, North Carolina The story of the Waldensians in North Carolina told through exhibits, museums, and the From This Day Forward Outdoor Drama.

Table Rock State Fish Hatchery north of Morganton, NC. Very interesting tours, pretty scenery, and all the fish you can dream about! Great place to take the kids.

Western North Carolina Attractions

In Asheville, North Carolina be sure and visit the beautiful Biltmore Estate. America's largest private residence. Tours of the Biltmore House and its associated winery are a great way to spend the day.

A ride on Tweetsie Railroad, and a visit to the Tweetsie Theme Park is a fun activity for the whole family. Tweetsie is located between Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Blowing Rock, both an attraction and a town. Beautiful views, antiques, crafts, and gifts in the town. Lodging, restaurants, and shopping are the highlights. Blowing Rock also has excellent art in the park festivals during the summer months.

Linville Caverns, North Carolina's only caverns. Unique views of the inside of a cave system. Located between Marion and Linville, North Carolina.

Chimney Rock Park, Famous in postcards. Be sure and visit for beautiful scenic view, enjoyable activities. Located South East of Asheville, North Carolina

Mount Mitchell Highest point east of the Mississippi.

Grandfather Mountain Natural scenic beauty, animals, activities and much more. Home of the annual Highland games.

A good way to visit parts of our area is to take a drive along the scenic miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
