Getting spirits high on holiday lights in Superstition Springs

With silver bells, jingle bells, and bagfuls of candy—“brrh,” make that a hot cocoa—a well bundled up Superstition Springs jury set out on a quest. On a chilly December night, a flatbed trailer full of carolers and light seekers crisscrossed all 13 parcels of the Superstitions Springs community to determine the grand prize winner of holiday illuminations.
“This is the first time that we had a hayride like that,” said Sherry Watson, the Community Manager for the Superstition Springs Community Master Association. Each parcel had previously chosen the winners in the neighborhoods. At last, an expert jury consisting of HOA Board of Directors and the Residential Design Review Committee members would scrutinize the finalists to award the grand prize.
With a final look at the map and coats pulled tighter, the Superstition Springs committee of all ages scooted snugly together on the bales of straw, and off they went. The faster the ride, the colder the wind was blowing. But that could not dampen the cheer about so many fabulous sparkling displays.
The Superstition Springs hayride was a hoot, especially when the lights were green on Power Road. The special wagon was honked and hollered at all along its way. And, driving by your own merrily decorated house, was the highlight of the evening for all riders.
After that night, the 13 best holiday displays earned a $50 Honey Baked Ham gift certificate each, plus an award plaque to put in their yard through January 1st. The grand prize winner, 7252 E. Natal, carried away a $75 gift certificate, enough purchasing power for a well-sized ham to throw an extra special holiday party.
“We all had a lot of fun with this project,” Sherry reported. “Bob Justen brought up the idea originally and kept pushing it until we got all the pieces together.” Bob, in the holiday spirit with Santa hat, also kept the cocoa hot while Sherry was filling cups.
Among the elves for the Superstition Springs Hayride also were Ben Bucholz, helping with the coordination, and Alex Winter from Sculptured Earth Resources, providing the flatbed trailer and bales of straw.
