Neighborhood InfoDillon Beach/Tomales is the place to go if you are looking for rural peace and quiet. Located about an hour's drive north of San Francisco, Dillon Beach/Tomales is a sleepy little town noted for its architecture. Vernacular houses and Italianate commercial buildings are side-by-side with charming little Queen Anne cottages. This eclectic mix reveals much about the town's past, and makes for interesting house hunting! Dillon Beach and Tomales Bay is famous for its oysters. A favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike is stopping at one of the oyster farms. Several offer barbecue-style picnic areas on a first come, first served basis; or you can buy a bag of oysters and take them home for a get together with friends. Favorites include Drake's Bay Oyster Farm, Hog Island Oyster Company, the Tomales Bay Oyster Company, and Point Reyes Oyster Company. Neighboring Point Reyes Station is the area's commercial anchor. Although small, the town has a hardware store, grocery, bank, and pharmacy. The world-renowned Cowgirl Creamery makes its famous cheese in a converted barn just off the main drag. Known as the Tomales Bay Food Company, the barn also houses several retail, delicatessen style shops that carry an assortment of gourmet treats, cheeses, and wines. With the Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay estuary nearby, horseback riding, hiking trails, boating, and kayaking are popular activities. Guarding the treacherous approach to the San Francisco Bay, the Point Reyeslighthouse is a perfect vantage point for watching the annual migration of the California Gray Whales. Imagine waking up on a beautiful spring day and having all this right outside your door! Most of the homes offered in the Tomales Bay- Dillon Beach area are single-family homes and reflect the nature of the area. They range from ranches to cozy cottages to sleek, custom built homes. Many properties have views of Dillon Beach, Tomales Bay or the surrounding mountains. West Marin is one of the few areas of Marin County where affordable homes with acreage can still be found.
