About the Neighborhood

In 1953, a 72-mile stretch of the Outer Banks from Nags Head to Ocracoke Island was set aside as the nation's first National Seashore. Today, much of Hatteras Island remains protected by that designation and is one of the country's most visited National Parks.  63 percent is federal parkland, another 14 percent belongs to the state and another 11 percent is wetlands. This leaves only 12 percent of the island open to private ownership and development. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore encompasses some of the most historic and environmentally fragile real estate in the world and is a paradox in many ways.

In fact, the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci set foot on the beach here in the 16th Century!  Four hundred years later, the wreckage of ships destroyed by German U-boats washed up on the same beaches. Blackbeard the Pirate once terrorized shipping from his base at Ocracoke. Today, the only terrifying aspect of a trip to that beautiful island is a wait at the ferry docks.

Known as the Tri-Villages, the communities of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo border one another on the north end of Hatteras Island, just south of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.  Sandwiched between the Atlantic to the east and the Pamlico Sound to the west, all three villages are small but filled with everything needed for the perfect vacation including water sports, beautiful beach cottages, restaurants and shops.

Here also is the home to the famous Chicamacomico Life Saving Station Historic Site offering a rich history lesson about the service that preceded the US Coast Guard.  Salvo is the quietest of the three villages, predominately residential and perfect for a quiet vacation.

Hatteras Island will always be a heavenly retreat far removed from the rest of the world. Visitors welcome the chance to enjoy this long, thin island that offers access to sea and sound, and more than three million of them visit Cape Hatteras National Seashore every year. The seven island villages maintain their quaintness and charm, thanks to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which contributes greatly to the Hatteras’s appeal.
