Penryn is located about 30 minutes east of Sacramento near the towns of Newcastle and Loomis. Penryn was founded by a Welsh immigrant by the name of Griffith Griffith. He established a granite quarry like the one where he and his father worked in Wales. The name of the welsh quarry was “Penrhyn”. The name was adapted to the current spelling, “Penryn”. When the great-niece of Griffith Griffith, Enid, died in 1976, she left 23 acres of the former quarry as a park. The former quarry office building, erected in 1877, now houses the Griffith Quarry Museum, staffed by volunteers and open on weekends from noon until 4:00 pm or by appointment. Penryn granite it’s noted for its beauty and strength. The granite has been used on local foundations and California landmarks including the State Capitol and US Mint in San Francisco. Another signature landmark is California Fan Palm trees! Not native to the area, these trees were planted in the 1890’s as boundaries to land owned by Joel Parker Whitney. Many of these trees are still alive on English Colony road. The post office established in 1973 is the only official government building today! Each year Penryn Firefighters hosts an annual “Oktoberfest”. This annual community event includes live bands, food, and music!! Penryn is a very rural community with large parcels of land. Homes range from smaller country homes to large customs. If you are looking for horse property or a place to keep you toys, Penryn could be a great choice. Sacramento is the closest area of major employment and Highway 80 provides easy access!
